There are 3 things I’ve noticed over time, having treated a lot of patients over the last 17 years, that tend to kill people’s sleep…
1- Going to bed at the same time every night.
Surprisingly, it’s better to go to bed when you’re feeling really sleepy. When we go to bed at the same time every night we’re basically saying that the mere act of taking ourselves to bed is going to make us sleep. In reality, most of the time it just makes us anxious. So, spend more time outside of the bedroom…
2- Lying in.
When we lie in we actually muck up our body clocks a bit. We don’t really know when to feel sleepy and when to feel awake. Waking up at the same time every day is a much better option, better still, wake up and get up at the same time every day.
3- Do a list of things to try and get a better night’s sleep.
People become very ritualistic and obsessive over it, filling their whole day with all these things that, supposedly help… like warm baths or special drinks. The reality is: that this is not going to work.
It’s better to liberate yourself from those things and spend your days having a good quality time – go and see your friends, have good exercise, go outside in the natural daylight. Enjoy yourself!
The 3 things are: go to bed when you’re feeling sleepy tired, wake up at the same time every day, and liberate yourself from all the things that don’t work and just enjoy yourself.
